TRAVELERS REST…..

Having run the gauntlet of dodgy police and border guards through Eastern Europe, Ian and Bev arrived here in their 28 year old VW camper van (Bus) yesterday. Their route from England to Turkey was through Holland, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania (No Vampires or bears seen) and Bulgaria.

They are coming to live here in Turkey, so today we are looking around for either a house or villa for them to rent.

They heard petrol was very expensive in Turkey, so they brought bicycles with them.

The van being 28 years  old needed some work doing to it before the long drive here from the UK, Ian did all the mechanical work and Bev made the curtains and re-upholstered the interior.

As well as cooker, fridge and wash basin, the van also boasts an Elephant shaped picnic table???

A house was found that they liked, after a few hours of haggling the contract was signed and money paid, next week they are having a ”Painting Party.”

  1. best of luck with the new life in Turkey…never heard of painting parties before!!

    • Hi owen,

Yeah the host buys everyone beer, then when your nicely relaxed your given a paint brush or roller to slap some paint around, many hands make light work!!

      Cheers,

      Dave….

  2. I suppose the beer would take the pain out of painting lol…

  3. Dave:

I noticed in the above family photo that Linda has stolen the show with poor Bev trying to squeeze in. I am not sure you are talking about the same travellers ! I checked the other blog and it seems they are still stuck in Umbria somewhere lost 2 months ago.
Nice photos of the VW Bus but where do they hide the chocolates ? I don’t see any in sight

    • Hi Uncle Bob,

Now they’ve retired in to a life of sumptuous luxury here in Turkey, Bev will have plenty of time to finish the two outstanding blogs….Linda had a chocie feast the day they arrived, I was only saved a few squares of chocolate Bob, Linda scoffed the lot!!!

      Hope your better soon,

      Cheers,

      Dave….

  4. And what happened to the Hobb Knobs!!

    • Hi Stan,

The Hobb Knobbs are still hidden in the van…..they will have to un-pack the van one day!!!

  5. Dave:

I don’t have a clue what Hobb Knobbs are, so could you send over a box so I know what I am missing ?

    thanks

on second thought, please send two or more tubes. They are only 80 calories each, then I will have more to glup down.

    • Hi Bob,

Yep Hob Nobs have 80 of the most yummy calories yet devised by mankind, especially when dipped in warm milky tea 🙂

I suspect they even have baked in medical properties that could cure your mystery illness!!

      Cheers,

      Dave….

    • I’ve dried my hands and fingers of sweat just long enough to type….It’s hot Bob, hot in the morning, hot during the day, hot at night, infact its bloody hot all the time and going to get hotter lol. When I manage a few hours of wet sticky sleep I dream of living on a snow covered mountain top in Switzerland 🙂

Linda, Ian and Bev went out today shopping in the big town of Fethiye, ıt was very, very hot there lol……I stayed home and tried to sleep with the gentle soothing hum of my own personal electric fan blasting straight at me!!

      Cheers,

      Melting Dave….

  9. Not seen much of you on here of late, are you going off bikes now you’ve come back from the big tour….

    • Hi James,

No, I’ve been deep in thought for a few weeks now and very distracted, when all the leaks started about 40% CGT etc prior to the emergency budget over there, I thought now would be a good time to move the old portfolio off-shore…so been looking for a new broker, and its very time consuming lol

      Cheers,

      Dave…..

  10. I’m with HSBC, I know what you mean about about the CGT, I was sweating a little myself and more than a little annoyed that my investments were going to be raided by the revenue to pay to keep all the work shy at home in the comfort that they have become used too!!

Premier has some good benefits, margin for one….I dont use it often but its nice to have the option!!

    • looked at Premier but couldnt find the long/short rate on any of their sites, also your required to open bank accounts with them first, so took a look at the ID requirements and they were a little tricky for someone whos been away from UK for over 5 years…Theres plenty on offer out there anyway, and WOW things have really moved on since I signed with my present broker back in the early nineties….What a farce that was lol…online brokers back in the days of dial-up internet, it was always quicker to phone than trying 35 times to log on to bloody Freeserve…AND keep a bloody connection for more than 5 minutes lol

So far I’ve whittled it down to UBS,SAXO and INTERNAXX but Internaxx charge 7.6 margin and 29E dealing…only your most desperate Columbian money launderer would pay those kinds of high fees lol..so there out!!

Saxo are 3 over LIBOR (0.72) and 8 dealing, -2.5 short, very attractive to juice the Q. divis on a long, with very generous margin up to 400k on sign up, going to delve into UBS next.

  11. 3.7 is not too shabby, on an 8.5% quarterly payer (Theres plenty around) that would be 4.8 for me. I dont recall without checking, but I dont think HSBC was that cheap…..Hmm got me thinking now!!!

God awful company…What ever happened to Freeserve lol…..

    • I have seen some at 2.5 + L, but cant remember where now….Think Freeserve died when the T bubble popped, dont remember once again, getting old lol!!!

  12. Dave:

I liked it better when you had the Transalp.

    • Hi Bob,

Yeah me too…Just waiting to what the Turkish gov throw at us next lol……

      Cheers,

      Dave….

  13. What’s happening? Moving back to Europe? My paternal grandmother’s family used to run a wine business in Plovdiv…

    • Hi Nikos,

yep been away from here for a month looking around Bulgaria, john pretty well covered all the ”Iffy” politics and creeping Islamification thats been going on here, such a shame whats happening here but no point staying for the last life boat, better to go now!!

will get internet line in a couple of weeks time, them i shall start a Bulgaria focused blog or perhaps keep this one going, not sure yet. We’ve been back in turkey just a few days and all the Brits here have been asking us question upon question about Bulgaria, lots of interest, lots of concerned Brits now since the referendum on Sunday!!

      Cheers,

      Dave…

      • Dave
Whilst Turkish people are generally very friendly on a one to one basis, the Turkish state is less so (my family were effectively persecuted and we have lost all our property)…so I am biased and not surprised at what’s been happening to you!

Where in BG are you going to go?

All the best, Nick aka nikos

        • Uncle Davie & Linda:

when you get settled send me a message so we know you are Okay. Hope you both are well.

Do you have a spare room in Bulgaria. First I have to find a map and figure out where you are, and how to get there

          luv

          • Hi Uncle Bob,

Just got the internet connected today, hence the late reply…Bulgaria is Eastern Europe, former Russian Commie controlled country, got their freedom when Russia collapsed 15 years ago and have made efforts ever since to join Europe and the European Union (EU) they are now only a couple of years away from full EU membership, so this means no visa or visa issues any more, any EU citizen from any of the 27 EU countries can just come here and do as one pleases. Bulgaria is also very, very cheap Bob.

Anyway bought a small farm here, now have 4 chickens and 1 dog lol…The house needs a lot of restoration, probably take me 18 months to get it all sorted, bought a car here, so am temporarily on 4 wheels at the moment, bike will come when I’ve finished the house (Sigh)….Going to blog it all…so far have taken a couple of hundred photos of our adventures here…Not sure if I should start a Bulgaria blog or just continue with this one..

            Cheers,

            Dave….

        • Hi Nikos,

Sorry for the late reply, just got internet today (Joy) Yep its exactly how you describe it, the Turkish gov. is the big problem, from 1st October the visa fee rockets up to 4000 lira per year per couple….AND I’ll wager it will not stop there!!!

Also coming in now is a duel taxation system for local council tax, foreign owned properties are taxed at a much higher rate than Turkish Nationals……Sorry to say it but only an idiot would buy a property in Turkey now.

We are near the old capital city of Veliko Tarnovo (VT) in a small middle class village just off the main highway, after 6 years in Turkey we really notice the difference, we now have cheap food, cheap internet, cheap petrol, cheap cars/bikes,cheap houses, AND UNCENSORED INTERNET…I can look at Google maps, Youtube,Flicker,Picasa,Blogger and Blogspot blogs again plus any other political or economic websites……LOL..Even Lindas knitting websites got banned in Turkey.

          Cheers,

          Dave…
