HERE COMES LUCY

Luceen has come to live here in Turkey with partner Mick, and part of her new life here is joining us on motorbike trips around Turkey….But first she has to learn to ride a motorbike. With most couples, self included, it’s almost impossible for one to teach the other anything without World War Three breaking out, hence I volunteered to teach Luceen and not Mick.

First was the safety drill, no sandals or flip-flops, sensible shoes or trainers…..and ”It hurts when you fall off…. so don’t fall off.”

Last years attempt at riding a scooter did not go well for either Lucy or the scooter, so I thought we should begin with the basic clutch/throttle and stop/start on soft ground, very soft ground.

Those of you who are regulars to this blog will recognise Lucy is riding  Montie, (Mondial MCT 250) at a little over 160KGs and 21 HP, it’s an ideal learner bike,  nicely balanced and very forgiving when you make mistakes.

All fears were soon abated, the scooter butcher of Dalaman turned out to be a natural on motorbikes, after an hour of   basic instruction on dirt tracks, it was on to the roads next.

We rode up and down the road,  practicing going up to 3rd gear and then down to 1st and stopping.

Next lesson will be up and down through all the gears, and then a short run out somewhere.

  1. Good for you … sounds like a sensible approach. I remember teaching my wife to drive ………. wish I didn’t remember LOL!!

    • Hi Chuck,

Its just one of those weird couples things…You say to your wife ”Well done – but we need to try that again” but your wife hears ”Your fat and stupid” LOL

      Cheers,

      Dave…

  2. Another victory for us girls 🙂

    • Hi Donna,

Yep Luceen did very well, she’s a natural and not too afraid to try!!

      Cheers,

      Dave…..

  3. Well Done Lucy!!…..You add a bit of glamour to Daves blog, we’re sick of looking at his ugly mug LOL…

    Stan

  4. Glad to see that you have identified Monties next owner so soon!

    • Hi Nikos,

As you can see from the photos it rains here as well, slightly warmer rain though lol….If I sold Montie, then I would have to shell out more money for another bike, no,no,no lol.

      Cheers,

      Dave….

  5. Welcome back, its a good idea some one other than husband teaching the mrs…..I might try that with my mrs. this summer.

  6. Dave:

You’re a good teacher. and a hearty welcome to Lucy.

    • Hi Uncle Bob,

More pictures to come, but today there was a cloud in the sky, just one, but a really big one that just hovered over town all day with brilliant sunshine around its perimeter. We were directly under the one dark cloud, enduring the odd rain drop, I’ll be glad when rainy season is over.

      Cheers,

      Dave….

  7. My turn next then Dave – hahahaha!! I’ll have to get there quick before you start charging tho’……….:)

    • Hi Aunty Bev,

Too late…I’m all ready charging double pom poms per hour lol.

      Cheers,

      Dave……

  8. Nice to see Montie out and about again, well done Lucy!!

    • Hi James,

The days are getting longer now, another few weeks and it’ll soon be 25c again, and the start of riding season, that will soon blow a few cobwebs of Montie !!

      Cheers,

      Dave….

  9. Dave:

we’re lucky if we get 25c on the hottest summer day. Last year was an exception. Another reason to move to Turkey

    • …is it really that cold where you live, even UK can reach 28c on the odd day…and it is only the odd day lol.

No tax here worth talking about, but the Worlds highest petrol (Gas) prices…the corvette would have to be left behind!!!

      Cheers,

      Dave….

    slightly off topic, but . . .

I did notice the YouTube changes when I got back. You just move the slider from 360p to 480p or 720p

also, when embedding a video onto your Blog, you have options to have them play HD as default, if you want to

I tried it and selected the 720p option, it changed the Box sizes and was too big for the space on the blog and cropped the video when playing back so you were missing the 16:9 ratio wide screen display. I think it has to do with how your layout is set up. I have the main body with Bloglist on the side. If use full screen then it would be okay

ps: Re: Hang glider. All video was handheld using a Panasonic DMC ZS3 with 12x zoom, recording HD 720p30. It just happened to fly past while I was “filming” the waves

    • Hi Bob,

I looked through my YT videos today, and they are definitely playing better quality now than they did before, if only YT could get over the music problem it would be perfect now!!

Your hands are steadier than mine…it always looks like an Earthquake is in progress whenever I hold a video camera lol.

      Cheers,

      Dave….

  11. Sorry I’m late but a summer riding accident had actually put me out of commission longer than I would have liked.
I wish you and your family a Happy New Year
    All the best for 2010

    • Hi Berge,

I remember your summer accident, thought it was just a little tumble…what happened?????

  12. Dave:

You don’t have to rub it in. 16c would be a heat wave here, and it won’t get that high until spring.

and to Berge: I thought we were going to get together sometime ?

    let me know

    • Hi Bob,

There was no ”Rubbing in” intended, it was so cold along the airport road today, for us warm blooded tropical mammals that are not used to it.

Had a bit of trouble trying to leave a comment on your blog.

      Cheers,

      Dave……

  13. Dropping in to say hello from Bukittingi. I hope the Suzuki is ok back in the village. I hear you’ve had a lot of rain…

    • Hi MD,

Yep freaky cold and wet weather here like a Biblical Tempest whilst you’ve been away…..today 10c, I had to look twice thought the thermometer was broken, all the mountain peaks around us are glistening white with a thick covering of snow….I can only guess that the sea must now be frozen solid and we can now walk to Cyprus!!

I might come and join you there in Butkicking, looks warmer there than here lol….

      Cheers,

      Dave……

  14. I mean… Bukittinggi.

  15. Dave, great post. It is galant of you to come to the aid of lovely ladies in need of learning to ride motorcycles LOL! Seriously, that is very cool that you are helping someone to learn this great sport!

    • Hi Lance,

Never thought of riding as a sport…..I just kinda sit there and hang on LOL….she has started looking on the websites here for her first bike, its probably going to be a 250cc local made machine – they are not sure yet!! 125cc are no use here because of the endless hill and mountain climbs, Turkey is a lot like Switzerland in places.

      Cheers,

      Dave…

  16. 10c I wont see that till March or April…you need to move some place warmer Dave.
