DAY 31 – GRANADA and AL HAMBRA

We had an early morning start to head inland to Granada and the famous palace of Al Hambra, this is one of Spain’s premier tourist attractions so we wanted to be there early and ahead of the crowds.

Whatever is growing in the fields on the way to Granada gives off the most heavenly scent, its a strange thing to notice but none the less I notice these things,  most of the countries we have been in, UK and Turkey being the exception, smell either nice, pleasant or wonderful, as Granada does, its a cross between freshly baked cake, Citrus, Almonds, Flowers  and Basil.

We arrived in Granada around 09.00 and followed the signs to Al Hambra, to our surprise hundreds of tourists were here already, there are three car parks at Al Hambra and two were full at 9am. I have been here before so I elected to have a little nap next to the bike while Linda went in, the entrance fee was 12 euro and visitors were admitted in waves so the palace did not become too crowded.

The palace was built in 1353 by the then Muslim (moors) rulers of Spain, it was taken in to Spanish hands in 1492 by Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand who’s armies retook the Granada region.

Linda was hours getting around Al Hambra so I had quite a nap in the car park, we got on the bike and then went on the dirt roads around the palace to take a photo of it from a distance.

We were both feeling a little tired and  lethargic today, probably due to the heat and yesterday in Gibraltar was very tiring,  we know we should carry more water with us and remember to drink it !  We called it quits early today and found a campsite on the outskirts of town.

The trouble with camping and sleeping  early, and we have done this a few time now, is one tends to wake around 01.00 and then have to try and go back to sleep again, since we know we both do this we have got in to the habit of saving some food and water in the tent for a midnight snack.
